OUR VINEYARDS

Misawa Vineyard Yamanashi

To make quality wines in Japan, the maximization of photosynthesis and good drainage are crucial. Our 12-ha estate vineyard at Akeno boasts the best terroir for wine grape-growing in Japan, with the longest growing season sunshine hours at an altitude of 700m at the foothills of the Kayagatake mountain range.

In addition to the plentiful sunshine hours, and a cool climate due to its altitude, the sloped Misawa Estate Vineyard is also able to capture the southerly wind essential for good canopy ventilation. Good drainage is ensured by carefully built underground pipes.

At Misawa Estate Vineyard, we trained our Koshu, Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot along rows using single guyot and double cordon.
This system allows us to obtain high quality grapes and at the same time maintain efficiency as well as environmental sustainability, without using herbicides, insecticides and chemical fertilizers.
We have built an experimental vineyard of 0.2 ha with high ridges in order to further facilitate water drainage.
As a result, we were able to harvest fruit with concentrated flavours for our Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.
Built on this experience, we have started planting Koshu on VSP in the same vineyard and are expecting a new level of flavour complexity. All grapes are hand-picked into 10kg harvest boxes. Double manual selection in the vineyard and in the winery of only the healthiest and ripest fruit, is vinified plot by plot, with ultra gentle handling. This ensures a sense of place and elegant flavours.
