OUR VINEYARDS

Katsunuma Yamanashi

Yamanashi is the first wine region awarded a Geographical Indication (GI) by the Japanese government.
The town of Katsunuma in Yamanashi has long been the hub of Japanese viticulture. Grace started working with quality local Koshu growers since its first generation and has established enormous trust with them, ensuring constant supply of high quality Koshu grapes.

Katsunuma is an inland valley enjoying a classic valley climate which enjoys long hours of sunshine, diurnal temperature variation and relatively little rain, conditions which are paramount for growing quality wine grapes.

Furthermore, Katsunuma is flanked by mountain water sources flowing into the valley, essential for the sometimes very warm summer weather. Soils are porous, which enables deep root penetration and good drainage.

Along the mountain paths, there are two subregions, Toriibira and Hishiyama, which constantly produce grapes with concentrated flavours.

Toriibira

Toriibira has particularly long sunshine hours due to its south-west facing slopes. Cool air from the nearby mountain pass has created diurnal temperature differences whereby fruits can retain their acidity. Thanks to the high sand content in the clay soil, and to the continual experimentation with long cordon and VSP training methods, the resulting grapes have a particular powerful expression of the terroir.

Hishiyama

Hishiyama is another mountainous wine grape-growing area in the largest wine grape-growing area in Katsunuma. While the geology is quite diverse, it has long been producing Koshu with a very good balance of sugar level and acidity.
