Grace Blanc de Blancs

VINTAGE 2014

“Grace Blanc de Blanc 2014” is made by gently pressing the Chardonnay grapes grown in our own vineyard in Akeno town, Hokuto City, Yamanashi Prefecture, fermenting in French oak barrels, followed by a second fermentation in bottle. A serious sparkling wine matured for a long period in-bottle for over 60 months, far exceed the 15 months as legally required for champagnes. Emphasis is placed on freshness and complexity of fruit, a delicate mouthfeel and very fine effervescence coming from the long maturation in the bottle.

Expressing Japanese beauty in wine

Wine born from playfulness
It is the tradition and mission of Grace Wine to pursue high quality Koshu wines. “Grace Blanc de Blancs” originated from a playful desire to make sparkling wine, a departure from the stiff sense of duty when facing Koshu.
When I made the first vintage of this wine in 2008, I wanted to craft an authentic classic method, in-bottle second fermentation sparkling wine that could age. Coupled with a hectic schedule of making vintages in Tasmania and Champagne, the days spend on perfecting the fine, persistent bubbles in the wine, fascinated by the mystery of second fermentation in bottles, were very enjoyable times. On the other hand, the more I researched on the science, the more I realise the paramount importance of a good base wine before the second fermentation.
With yield kept below 40 hl/ha, we manually performed riddling and disgorgement bottle by bottle, and while learning from our experience year to year, we are hoping to approach the ideal taste for the wine.

Aiming for greater heights
On a whim, I entered into the Decanter World Wine Awards 2016 competition organised by the British wine magazine “Decanter”, the 2011 vintage got a high score of 96 points and we are honoured to have won the first platinum award for sparkling wine in Asia. As the world’s largest wine competition with the highest number of entries, our wine came at the top 1%, and it was the first time a Japanese wine made with European grape varieties won an award above the gold in this competition. I started to think that a sparkling wine made with a playful spirit would not be able to sustain exceptional quality, and my sense of responsibility caught on. In order to maintain the honour the wine has gained, I strived to exceed the quality of the 2011 vintage, by lengthening lees ageing from 3 years to 5 years, with a name change from “Grace Extra Brut” to “Grace Blanc de Blancs”.

2014 Vintage
The harvest season began in late August. After two snowfalls in February, the vineyard was covered with 160 cm of snow, and I was wondering what would happen, but the grapes that survived the harsh natural conditions seem to have metamorphosed in the bottle and shined through ever more after six years from harvest.

Tasting Note

Lemonish yellow. The effervescence from the bottom of the glass is fine and persistent. Not only are there fresh fruits aromas such as lemon, orange, and green apple and lovely floral characters, there are also toastiness derived from the second fermentation in the bottle and an attractive honey aroma, wrapped around by the noble power and boldness of a refreshing blanc de blancs.
The carefully crafted mousse is fine, creamy and pleasant. On the palate, a pleasing acidity outlining the structure reminiscent of Côte des Blancs, layers of fruit, nuts and honey flavors superimposed on each other, and the lingering finish retains the umami of the long in-bottle aging. Enjoyable maturation awaits this wine made with all our workmanship.

A sparkling wine selected as one of the top 10 wines of the world

“Grace Blanc de Blancs 2014” (aged for 5 years in-bottle) was selected as one of the Bloomberg 2019 top 10 wines of the world, along with Chateau Lafitte Rothschild and Egon Müller.
It is a sparkling wine that has been aged for two years longer than our second wine “Grace Extra Brut 2014”, and can be said to be the culmination of our winemaking.

The 2019 top 10 wines of the world, in addition to France and Germany was a Japanese wine.

I remember the surprise I had when I visited the wine region of Yamanashi. This is an impressive sparkling wine made by the traditional champagne method. The region is known for its local grape Koshu, but this wine is all Chardonnay.
With a fine mousse, fresh brioche and citrus aromas, delicate mineral flavors, it resembles a fine Récoltant Manipulant champagne.
I tasted it with the owner, Shigekazu Misawa, and the winemaker, Ayana Misawa, the eldest daughter, at the estate vineyard at Akeno.
