Grace Koshu

VINTAGE 2019

Katsunuma is Japan’s top Koshu producing region situated at the eastern end of the Kofu Basin.
The Katsunuma area is an alluvial fan with widely distributed well-drained soil, and has been suitable for viticulture since ancient times. The characteristic intricate terrain and complex soils give rise to vines that show the distinguishing sense of place.

We insist on using grapes grown above 400m for Grace Koshu.
Koshu cultivated on high altitude areas in the hills such as Toriihira in Katsunuma, Hishiyama and Fukasawa districts, has limited yield and concentrated flavours compared with those grown on flatlands.
In the vineyards, in order to reduce the effects of autumn rain, each bunch is covered with a shade (umbrella) and picked at optimal maturity. These carefully cultivated and harvested grapes are chilled when arrived the winery and undergo long gentle pressing.
The winemaking process emphasises the scientific point of view, does not rely on technological prowess and strives to express the individuality of the grape variety and Katsunuma’s sense of place, through deep knowledge of the individual districts and plots.
Koshu is becoming well-known in the world as a wine which has won the gold award for five consecutive years at the world’s largest wine competition. We hope that you will welcome Grace Koshu and experience the deliciousness of Japanese wine.

2019 Vintage

The growing season was light in rain with plenty of sunshine, smoothly promoting growth. July was rainy and cloudy, and maturity slowed down, but thanks to the good weather at the end of August, the delay in the summer was made up for. There was little damage from the autumn typhoon, and we were able to wait for full maturity before harvesting.

Crystal clear and brilliant pale lemon yellow with a green tinge. Aromas are rich and attractive with impression of fresh pears, white peaches, honeysuckles, rosemary, cloves and minerality reminiscent of stones. On the palate, smooth mouthfeel and dry. The vibrant acidity is persistent and reinforces the middle to the the back palate. Flavours are like the aromas, and the wine finishes off with a hint of umami. A delicate and refreshing white wine with a good balance between aromas and flavours.
